INTRODUCTION OF THE REFUGE P NAN
The Refuge P Nan is an international private non-profit christian
organization assisting international refugees and North Korean refugees seeking
asylum in South Korea. We were registered as an NGO by the Korean Ministry of Justice on the day of Nov.8, 2005 (Reg. No. 6). We, over one hundred and twenty volunteer activists, have been assisting and supporting refugees from Kurdistan, Bangladesh (including the Chittagong Hill Tracts), Burma (including Chinland), the Democratic Republic of Congo, North Korea and other countries since June 1999.
We are supporting over 1800 international refugee applicants from around 30 countries including those in South Korea and among other refugee groups abroad. The biggest group we are supporting abroad is the Chin jungle refugees in Malaysia. We started this activity from Sep. 2007 after finding out about their miserable situation when we visited Malaysia, Thailand, and India to research the Chin refugee human rights situation. This research was our 3rd research program following research in the Bangladesh Chittagong Hill Tracts and along the Thailand and Burma border (the 1st research, 2004), and African countries (Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Ethiopia, Egypt, the 2nd research, 2006).
Our activities have been made known through many local and international media, including Newsweek magazine, published on March 7, 2001 (Vol. 469), which carried a special report, "Ride of the Seoul Train" covering our activities to aid North Korean refugees. We have also been running a unique and well-known school, called Jayoutuh School, for former North Korean refugees since January, 2003, an International Refugee School since Nov. 2003, a Refugee Sharing Closet since Mar. 2005, and the Nations Kids School for refugee kids since May 2007. Because of our active and strong support to refugees, we received an award, the Citizens' Human Rights Prize, on Sep. 13, 2007 commemorating the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Seoul Bar Association
